Flannel Quilts

February 8, 2015

There are three really good reasons why I love to work with flannel.  It's easier to free motion quilt on flannel than other fabrics.  I can usually hit a sale and stock up on it.  Flannel is so soft and and not just for babies.  I made my husband a flannel quilt and my son absconded with it.  Whenever my son hears his father asking about his quilt, my son puts his finger to his lips to signal to me to stay quiet.  I know he hid it in his room.  I'm not going to rat him out but I have loose plans to make another one just like the first one.  That will keep the peace.

I cut 6 inch squares and and added two borders.  One border was a 2 inch strip and the second border was 4 inch border strip.  It was close but I was able to use one width of fabric (WOF) for the backing.  I'm plan to make a second one but will make the second border a 3 inch cut.

There's a huge selection of flannel prints available.  Not all prints are for babies.  Click on the flannel quilt below to view  in flannel gallery.

This is how the blocks will look.
This is how the blocks will look.

Notice that the block with the white square is made of charm pack.  You can do this a bit and it will not be noticiable.  So, if you have any extra fabric, use 5 x 5 inch squares and sew together to make one ten inch block.

Here is an example of a manly flannel quilt.  It is not the one that I made for my husband.  I can't take that one out of hiding to take a picture of it.  It's in the photo gallery, it's the one made with Boundary Water Fabric.
